Here is perhaps my favorite batik necktie ever—a striking square-end Rooster printed in indigo and yellow on pale beige. The history of wax-resist dyeing goes back thousands of years, with evidence of the technique having been found in ancient Egypt, China, and West Africa, and perhaps its most well-known expression is the batik tradition from Java, now recognized by UNESCO as part of Indonesia’s intangible cultural heritage. The technique essentially comprises preventing dye from infusing areas of a cloth (“resisting”) by means of a mixture of paraffin and beeswax, and then removing the wax once the cloth has dried to reveal a design. The process can be repeated as many times as desired, and at its most expressive, batik can consist of intricate designs of 20+ colors, requiring almost a year to successfully complete. While batik designs began appearing in the US in the first half of the twentieth century, its popularity exploded in the late 1950s and early 1960s, making its way onto shirts, dresses, jackets, cummerbunds, pants, and ties, when this handsome example was dyed and stitched together. Authentic wax batik on 100% cotton, made by Rooster, Inc., c.late-1950s/1960s. Immaculate vintage condition; 54.25”x1.875”.
